I am always excited for the Christmas holidays. It is usually a time when we have a good many days off from work, a time when we eat yummy foods and have lovely decorations in our home. And talking about decorations, unlike Mr.AP I always think we could do with a bit more on our tree.

This year I fell in love with the idea of making a little gnome hat. I took out my stash of felt scraps and began experimenting with this and that. Pretty quickly I came up with a little design and started on the hat. As I was finishing it I thought something was missing. A bit of life I thought. And that’s when the idea of a mustache and a nose occurred to me. The beard was a natural progression from there.

Bottom and the back

It is a project that I can really recommend if you feel like crafting. You can either sew the hat if you have experience, or it can be done with just craft glue or a hot glue gun if you want to steer clear of needles. And the best thing is, it can be finished in an afternoon! You can find the pattern for the hat on the Printables page up above.

A couple of tips:

  • Start with the star first, then put together the hat.
  • If you want your hat to have a curly tip, sew or glue a pipe cleaner to the seams. This way you’ll be able to bend it any way you like.
  • If you want the hat to stand on point insert a cone made from stiffer card stock paper into it. If you prefer a softer result, stuff it with cotton.

If you decide to make one make let me know. I’d love to see your recreations!
